Traditionally, treatments for gum disease could last for months at a time, involving incisions, stitches, swelling, bleeding, and numerous follow up visits. Fortunately, there are newer methods available for treating gum disease that do not involve months of periodontal therapy. In fact, laser gum disease treatment can have your gums healthy again within a couple two-hour visits. This method utilizes PerioLase technology.
There are two main stages of gum disease: gingivitis, and periodontal disease. During the first stage of gingivitis, the gums become infected and swollen, making them red, sensitive, and prone to bleeding. Gingivitis can usually be treated with normal oral hygiene and dental cleanings.
If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontal disease. At this point, the infection causes the gums to detach from the teeth, creating pockets in which bacteria form plaque and tartar. As the disease progresses, the bone itself under the gums can become damaged, potentially leading to tooth loss.
The nature of periodontal (gum) disease makes it difficult to treat without risking damage to the tooth or bone. Because of this, traditional treatments are extensive, tedious, and often painful. With PerioLase treatments, however, discomfort and recovery time are minimal, and the procedure itself is much, much faster.
How Does It Work?
PerioLase uses a fiber that is inserted between the gums and the tooth. This fiber then emits pulses of light that clear away bacteria and infected tissue, creating an environment in which the gums can reattach to the tooth and healing can occur. The process goes something like this:
- A local anesthetic is applied to take care of any potential discomfort.
- Your dentist will measure the depth of the pocket around the tooth.
- By using the laser fiber, infected tissue and bacteria are cleared away.
- Plaque buildup is scraped away from the tooth using an ultrasonic scaler.
- The laser fiber may be inserted once more for final cleanup and to induce blood clotting.
- The clotting allows the gum to reattach to the tooth.
The entire treatment is often done in two visits, each one lasting two hours. A couple of follow up visits are made to check up on how your gums are healing. After each procedure, you can easily go back to life as usual without anything more serious than a bit of soreness.
With PerioLase technology, you can recover fully from gum disease treatment without the pain, swelling, stitches, and bleeding involved in traditional gum surgery. Recovery time is minimal (within 24 hours) and the treatment can be completed in a matter of weeks rather than months. The treatment is also no more expensive than traditional procedures and is covered by most dental insurance plans.
It is important to note that in order to do its job, the procedure needs to be done properly.
