Braces Side Effects and Treatments from Our Orthodontics Experts
Orthodontics are an extremely common dental procedure. Many people have had braces or Invisalign to straighten and adjust their smile, often when they were teens or young adults. As your teeth and jaw become better aligned, however, you may experience a variety of different side effects. At Lynn Dental Care, our orthodontics experts understand the pain and discomfort that often comes with braces. In today’s blog, we discuss some of the side effects that are common with braces and ways to counteract these side effects.
Common Side Effects of Braces
Since braces and Invisalign work by shifting your teeth and your jaw, that process often brings some discomfort. Headaches and tooth pain are common discomforts that may occur with your orthodontic treatments. Usually, these discomforts can be managed with pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If your headaches or tooth pain become more intense and uncomfortable, let your orthodontist know!
The wires and brackets used with braces can cause mild irritation to the inside of your mouth. It takes a while for your mouth to get used to the new wires in your mouth. Luckily, there are several products that help reduce that irritation. One of the most popular products is orthodontic wax. You can place the wax over the wire or bracket that is causing the irritation to reduce the discomfort. If you have a wire that is sharp and causing your mouth or gum to bleed, ask your orthodontist to fix it at your next appointment.
If part of your orthodontic work requires the readjustment and realignment of your jaw, you may experience jaw pain during the adjustment period. Depending on the severity of the pain, it may be managed with over the counter pain relievers or may require additional treatment options from your orthodontist.
