After Oral Surgery: Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom tooth removal is a fairly common oral surgery procedure. There’s nothing to be scared of but there can be some discomfort after surgery. You can mitigate this discomfort and speed up the healing process by following some simple post-surgery instructions. After your oral surgery, your dental care specialist will give you a list of instructions, but it doesn’t hurt to do your research beforehand.
Instructions for After Your Oral Surgery
Immediately after your oral surgery, you’ll experience some bleeding from the extraction area. This is normal, but you’ll want to gently bite down on a gauze pad until this bleeding subsides. Make sure to change your gauze periodically and don’t bite down too hard.
When lying down, make sure to prop your head up. Elevating your head will reduce swelling and bleeding.
Use an ice pack early and often. Applying an ice pack will greatly minimize swelling that you may experience.
Don’t use straws and eat soft foods. A straw can loosen the blood clot that was formed and leave you with a case of dry socket. Soft foods will not only be easier to eat, they’ll be soothing to your extraction area. Foods such as pudding and smoothies are very soothing and easy to eat. Just make sure you’re not drinking your smoothie with a straw!
Keep your mouth clean. Rinse your mouth with warm water with salt. Make sure to do this gently. Brush your teeth as best you can. Don’t do it to the point that it’s painful, just what you’re comfortable with.
Manage your pain. You will inevitably experience some pain and discomfort. You’ll be prescribed medication to help with this, but ice packs can also help. Milkshakes and ice cream can also offer you some temporary relief.
Take the time you need to recover. You’ll probably be fairly uncomfortable for the first few days, so don’t overexert yourself. Take off school or work for a few days if possible. Avoid exercise and physical labor for a few days as well. Overexerting yourself can cause your recovery time to be longer than it needs to.
