What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a structure that is placed in the gum and serves as the root for a fabricated crown, bridge, or denture. During the simple in-office procedure, the structure is placed within the gum where the natural tooth was lost and packs the area with gauze for 20-30 minutes while the area begins to heal and the patient is able to go home. It will take about three months for the implant to completely heal and become part of the arch, at which time the patient comes back for an abutment and crown— or bridge, denture, etc. The fabricated tooth is placed onto an abutment. The abutment is a small object that acts as a cushion for the crown so that when the patient bites down or is chewing the tooth has some give and therefore feels natural. Dr. Lynn then will check periodically, when the patient comes in for routine checkups, that the crown is doing well and that the patient is content.
How Do I Care For An Implant? Do I Need To Do Anything Special?
Dental implants can remain in excellent condition for the life of the patient, if the patient has proper oral hygiene. In some cases, a bone graft is required to ensure that the implant has enough to hold on to in the jaw and may require extra follow-up visits and extra care. However, in any case oral hygiene is imperative for the health of an implant. This means flossing after every meal, brushing after every meal, and for routine check-ups and cleanings. If properly taken care of, the implant and crown/bridge/denture will look great and can last without causing additional problems.
