Culturally speaking, traditional dentures—and all the challenges they present—have been one of the marks of old age. Those who have lost some or all of their teeth will usually use a form-fitting denture bridge as a teeth replacement. Technically, these are designed to be held in place by means of suction to the gums, but they also usually require an adhesive as well. Even with that, they tend to inhibit your ability to eat some foods, such as apples, corn on the cob, carrots, steak, and so forth. They may also get in the way of other activities, such as talking or kissing.
An alternative to traditional dentures is All-on-4 dental implants. These utilize four titanium implants to keep a denture bridge permanently secured to the bone beneath the gums, thus avoiding many of the problems presented by normal suction-held dentures. Implants are metal posts that are drilled into the bone under the gum line and that replace tooth roots.
All-on-4 dentures have advantages over not only traditional dentures, but previous dental implants as well. Older methods required anywhere from eight to twelve implants, and thus required more resources and recovery time. With All-on-4, however, only four implants are required to hold a denture bridge in place, saving time and money while reducing discomfort. This is possible because two of these posts are placed at an angle, increasing their strength and contact with the bone.
A few of the more specific benefits that come with getting All-on-4 implant dentures include the following:
- Preserves bone structure: Muscles, brains, and bone all develop with stimulation, and this is no less true for the bone in your mouth and face than anywhere else in your body. Normally, these facial bones are stimulated through teeth roots as they endure the pressures of chewing. Without teeth and their roots, however, the bones tend to atrophy. Titanium implants are beneficial in that they will graft into the bone and provide the kind of stimulation that dentures cannot.
- No slipping: Dentures have a tendency to slip and slide around, making it hard or impossible to eat certain foods. It can also be embarrassing when a denture bridge falls out of place. Perhaps more seriously, however, is the fact that sliding dentures can lead to painful denture sores on the gums. Having a permanently fixed denture implant will eliminate these problems.
- Fast and cost-effective: With fewer posts than traditional implants, All-on-4 dentures cost less, take less time to implant, and require less recovery time. Normally, the surgery to place the four posts for each bridge is about 2 to 3 hours. They also do not require special adhesives or cleaning chemicals since they remain permanently in place and can be brushed like normal teeth.
