Wisdom Tooth Extraction

In many cases, the emergence of wisdom teeth can negatively impact the alignment of other teeth, leave the mouth susceptible to infection, and cause a great deal of patient discomfort. When this occurs, it is beneficial to remove the wisdom teeth through oral surgery. By carefully monitoring the progression of his patients’ oral health, Dr. Lynn is able to determine whether or not the wisdom teeth need to be removed, and if so, the optimal time for extraction. Dr. Lynn will create an incision in the gums and remove the wisdom teeth before closing the area with stitches. Oral surgery to remove wisdom teeth is a very common and safe procedure that typically lasts about one hour.

Types of Oral Surgery

At Lynn Dental Care, we enjoy being with our patients every step of the way, which is one of the many reasons why Dr. Lynn performs oral surgery for his Dallas, Texas patients. Rather than referring patients to new physicians who aren’t familiar with his or her particular condition, we create a personalized experience that allows them to feel safe and comfortable. We understand that the prospect of having to undergo oral surgery can be quite unnerving, and do everything we can to ease those tensions. In addition to providing friendly, compassionate care, Dr. Lynn and his staff are certified in sedation and anesthesia techniques. They can administer appropriate treatment during the following oral surgeries.

Dental Implant Placement

In an effort to provide the most comprehensive and convenient care to all of his patients, Dr. Lynn performs the implant placement procedure himself, rather than referring patients to an outside oral surgeon. Because Dr. Lynn is involved in every stage of the treatment when patients are receiving dental implants, he is able to provide safe and accurate care, and patients can feel comfortable every step of the way. During dental implant placement, Dr. Lynn will open the gums and place titanium posts into the jawbone. These posts will later serve as anchors for the placement of prosthetic teeth.

Bone Grafting

In instances where the bone has deteriorated due to infection or has become damaged due to trauma, bone-grafting surgery may be necessary to bolster the support structure of the mouth. Bone from other sources such as human cadaver bone or synthetic substitutes may be used. This procedure utilizes healthy bone from other areas of the mouth and body to rebuild areas of the jawbone that have been weakened. In the event that the bone cannot be taken from a different area of the mouth, it is usually taken from the hip. Bone grafting is most frequently performed for patients who require treatment such as the placement of dental implants, as the results of surgery provide a strong jawbone that can support dental restorations.

One form of bone grafting surgery is known as a sinus lift. This procedure is performed when patients have lost their upper back teeth. Dr. Lynn will perform oral surgery to lift the sinus, making room for the placement of bone. Once the bone is inserted, it can serve as a strong root for replacement teeth.

Ridge augmentation is another form of oral surgery that is performed after tooth loss. If the jawbone has receded following tooth loss, this can create an unnatural look, and cause the gums to detract as well. By adding bone to the affected area, Dr. Lynn can reverse the effects of deterioration and create an aesthetically pleasing restoration, as well as provide adequate support for the implant.

Pinhole Surgery

Dr. Lynn Performs Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique in Dallas, Texas

Gum recession breakthrough treatment also known as Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™ and Lunchtime Gum Lift™

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST®), invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S., is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for treating gum recession. This procedure is performed by making a small hole with a needle in the gum tissue. Using specially designed instruments, the gum tissue is loosened and guided over the receded part of the tooth. Since there is no incision or suturing, patients can expect minimal post-operative symptoms (pain, swelling and bleeding). Most patients also are pleasantly surprised by the instant cosmetic improvement.

Root Canal Therapy at Lynn Dental Care

When it comes to dental care, early detection of cavities and decay is vital to preserving oral health and preventing the need for more extensive oral surgery. If left untreated, trauma and decay can lead to the infection of the tooth’s root and surrounding nerves. In these situations, a root canal procedure may be necessary in order to salvage the remaining tooth structure and avoid extraction. Dr. Brock Lynn performs endodontics, also known as root canal therapy, to aid patients of Lynn Dental Care who are experiencing difficulty due to progressed infection. Keeping both patient health and comfort in mind, he is able to treat the affected area successfully. If you are experiencing symptoms of root infection, or have been told you need a root canal, contact our Dallas office today to schedule a consultation.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

stock-photo-27611305-tooth-x-ray-filmThe root canal of the tooth consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue which, when infected, can compromise the tooth structure, increase bone loss in the jaw, and cause persistent pain. Infection can occur if a cavity becomes especially deep or if there is trauma to the tooth. Lynn Dental Care performs root canal therapy to eliminate this infection and minimize damage to the tooth and the surrounding bone.

During an initial dental appointment, Dr. Lynn will examine the mouth to determine the degree of infection and decide if root canal therapy is the best course of action. This may include taking digital X-rays, using a pulp tester, or applying hot or cold compresses to determine the tooth’s sensitivity level. If the root is actually infected, Dr. Lynn will begin root canal treatment at the Lynn Dental Care office in Dallas, Texas. This involves removing the infected nerve tissue and cleaning the surrounding areas. Once this is complete, Dr. Lynn will seal the canal with a thermoplastic sealer to prevent further infection from returning to the root. Usually, patients will receive a dental crown to restore strength and appearance of the smile. For the patient’s comfort, root canal therapy is typically performed with local anesthesia and is, in fact, nearly pain-free. Patients can also request Sedation for their appointment.

Who Needs Root Canal Therapy?

It is vital for Lynn Dental Care patients who have an infection in the nerve of the tooth to undergo root canal therapy. Treating the infection site is the only way to save the natural tooth and prevent infection from spreading to the gums, bone, and surrounding teeth. Maintaining proper oral hygiene habits is essential to preventing infection and the need for root canal therapy. In the event that the root does become infected, however, symptoms may include:

  • Persistent toothaches
  • Discomfort while chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Bad breath or foul taste in the mouth
  • Fever – in severe cases

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

In the event a root canal is infected, root canal therapy is both necessary and beneficial to sustained oral health. If you are experiencing discomfort and believe you may need root canal therapy, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Some of the benefits of the procedure include:

  • Increased comfort – pain associated with infection is alleviated after treatment
  • Preservation of the natural tooth
  • Prevents the spread of infection
  • Prevents bone deterioration and jaw misalignment caused by extraction
  • Eliminates need for extraction and restorative oral surgery procedures, such as placement of dental implants
